Memorial Memories
'A little piece of home'

May 24, 2009
2:30 p.m.
Admission is complimentary

Memorial Memories is a free concert offered as a gift to the community from UTSA and the Institute of Texan Cultures. The 2.5 hour performance features the Big Band sounds of the Sentimental Journey Orchestra under the direction of Ted Conerly, with the lively Memphis Belles trio and soloist Jesse Boatright presenting original arrangements of swing and jazz standards from the Big Band era.

Bob Guthrie, WOAI radio personality and San Antonio icon, will serve as the master of ceremonies. The production will be accompanied by evocative photos and film clips from the battlefront and the homefront on the overhead screens of the Dome Show Theater.

2009 marks the 70th anniversary of the beginning of World War II and the 68th anniversary of the U.S. entry into the Pacific Theater following the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The United States Armed Forces comprised some 16.1 million men and women in uniform during World War II. The U.S. sustained some 671,000 wounded and 292,000 killed in action, and 114,000 additional Americans died as a result of their service to their country.

The performance will pay homage to each branch of the military, those who have served and those currently serving at home and abroad. This year's ceremony should be particularly meaningful to veterans and their families, with a commemoration of the 65th anniversary of D-Day.

During WWII, the average overseas deployment lasted 16 months. Along with letters and photos from home, the golden sounds of the Glenn Miller Band and the sweet voices of the Andrews sisters soothed and strengthened American personnel, as they hoped for a safe return. Many called the music "a little piece of home."

Complimentary refreshments will be served during intermission. Mementos will be sold at the Museum Store.
